Getting it back together

I purchased the book How Not to Die and the companion cookbook. I also watched a documentary titled What the Health. As a result I have completely changed my way of eating. I decided to begin eating a plant based diet because I wanted to change the way my habits effect the earth and also to improve my health. I have eaten cheese and fish on occasion but other than that I am plant based. I’ve lost 6 pounds and I have a lot more energy. I am breathing easier as well. This is am Asian, spicy, ginger soup with rice that I made. It was delicious.

My daughter and son-in-law went to a wake on Wednesday night so I got to babysit for Verne and Abigail! We ordered pizza and sang songs and jumped on the big chair in the den…well, they did…shhhh…don’t tell mum and dad. What happens with Hopie stays with Hopie. I’m Hopie!

After I put Abigail’s pajamas on she brought her bathrobe over and said, “eh eh, eh.” She held her arm out for me to put it on her. So cute!

It’s been an emotional few weeks. The fourth anniversary of my step-daughter’s death was on 28 February. I found I wasn’t as much of a basket case this year as I was for the first three years. My father-in-law died last month as well.

My sister had surgery to repair a prolapsed mitral valve and went into Afib the night of the surgery. She is home now but it was very frightening to hear her tell me about it. She was thinking of our father, who had a fatal heart attack in hospital when he was just bout her age. Poor sweet girl has been through so much and it just keeps coming at her. Please keep her in prayers. I believe that God has a plan for all of us and I have faith that he loves her and cares for her more than I ever could but it is not easy to see her go through all of this. She will start her fourth radiation treatments and her fourth chemo treatments in March. She was first diagnosed with colon cancer in 2010.

  1. Oh dear sounds like a stressful week minusmthe joy of watching your grandchildren.

Yay for embracing a plant based diet!!! I do too for the most part. I’m slowly cutting out cheese from my diet. I don’t eat pork, fish, or beef although i do sometimes eat chicken. I love tofu stir fry! And i make an African soup you can find on my blog. I also make an Asian soup with ginger and snow peas. It’s so delish!! Our youngest daughter is a pure vegan and she’s spurred us on to stop the meat.

    Have a lovely weekend!

  2. What a cute bathrobe! Sounds like fun time at Hopie’s!

Those anniversaries can be so hard.

I’m so sorry about your sister’s health issues. Praying for healing and God’s grace.

  3. What a scare your sister had, I am so glad she came thru it! You have a lot on you right now, so many sad anniversaries. I will also pray for peace for you. The kid’s pictures are SO cute!! I can tell how much they love it when you babysit! The soup looks so good, I would love the recipe.

  4. Good for you on eating healthier!
Fun times with the grands can always help cheer a person. I gotta say, I’m loving that unicorn robe on your grandgirlie! Praying your sister’s healing journey is easier from now on.

  5. Good for you for adopting a plant based diet. We have more vegetarian meals than we used to but I’m not sure we could give it up completely. I’m sorry your sister had such a scare. I hope she recovers well now but sounds like she has a hard time ahead. Good that your week was brightened by the Grandkids. Hope you have a good weekend.

  6. My condolences. Four years ago is just a moment. I scrolled back through your blog and saw her story. 22. It is not long enough. Blessings. Peace.

  7. A week of really mixed emotions. Sometimes we need those sweet happy times to help make our journey through the difficult ones easier and smoother. I do hope your sister continues to do well, it does sound like she has been through a very tough time.

  8. Oh my heart hurts for you. I remember reading about your step daughter’s passing (was it really four years ago??). I will pray for your sister and that she will be well soon. You have had a tough week. But I love how you still found blessings in the difficult week. Your grandkids are adorable!

  9. PS: re: How not to Die–I have heard Dr Greger speak a couple of times. He does so much research! I am also mostly whole food plant based in my diet and have been for many years. It has made a huge difference in my health!

  10. What precious moments spent with your grandbabies. Sounds like they have so much fun with you. Such a cute little unicorn. 🙂 Oh that must have been so scary for your sis. Saying a prayer for her as she faces another round of treatments. May God’s strength carry her and and may He bring healing to her body. So sorry for your loss and praying for you as you work through the anniversary that brings pain.
