Hollyhocks of an evening ~growing up out of a crack between a sidewalk and the old house. They forever make me think of summer and home.

Isn’t it funny how a flower can bring you memories of honeyed days…violets were my grandmother’s favourite, mint reminds me of the friendly old man who lived next door to us and always had a patch of it in his garden, my mum loves Peonies and tells me stories of ants and grape jelly when hers are blooming.

Anyway…here are some of the hollyhocks which are blooming all over the crooked and narrow streets of Marblehead.

  1. Such a lovely picture! For some reason, I think of hollyhocks as an old fashioned plant. One year, I goaded Phil into digging some up from a roadside field, and planting them in our yard. They got tiny little gold bugs with long snouts. I have never seen the bugs anywhere else.
